My Fellow Sponges are an independent band from Galway, on the west coast of Ireland. After four years of touring and writing together their sound incorporates elements of Minimalism, Folk, Bossa and more recently synth-heavy electro with influences that include: Kate Bush, Devendra Bahnhart, Joanna Newsom, Brian Eno, Philip Glass and Django Django.
Barry Egan from the Independent.ie says “My Fellow Sponges are as bizarre as they are brilliant in their peculiar sonic way that on any given song can include ukelele, glockenspiel, harmonium, drums.
On stage this prog folk Arcade Fire on acid sound can extend to include a brass band playing as well as mime artists, dancers and actors in excelsis”.
Having a Sell out show at Galway’s Cúirtfestival, and also playing in many Irish festivals such as Body & Soul, Electric Picnic, Vantastival and Sunflower festival; My Fellow Sponges have had a busy year. We have featured on theIrish Independent’s Windmill Lane Sessions, TG4’s Clár An Imeall, Lyric FM Blue of the night, and Arena on RTE Radio 1.
“Having a taste for pretty much all genres our music ranges from prog folk, to eerie minimalism, to orchestral trip hop, hints of electro pop and monk fruit Jazz. We are currently recording our second album to follow up 2013’s “Bonne Nuit” and 2014’s E.P “Something like light” and we have just released a single called “Air”.”
Band members include Donal Mc Connon (Clarinet, guitar, vocals and banjo), Anna Mullarkey
(Vocals, Synthesisers, Bodhrán, piano, guitar), Sam Wright (Bass, banjo), David Shaugnessy
(Drums).
